Discover the insights powering Australasia’s Sales generation.

Since 2017, we have been capturing the mood and sentiment of the sales community across New Zealand, expanding into Australia in 2024. The purpose is to understand the challenges and expectations of those on the front lines.

Sales leaders and salespeople are uniquely positioned to read the market; they see shifts in sentiment long before most, and their predictions have proven remarkably accurate since the very first survey.

Heading into its 10ᵗʰ year in New Zealand and 3rd in Australia, The Mood of the Sales Leader™ has evolved into the definitive annual report on the state of sales and sales leadership across Australasia.

Since 2017 we have had more than 5,000 contributors who collectively are responsible for billions in revenue. We have gathered over 250,000 data points which have provided a clear picture of how sales is performing and how broader economic and organisational factors are shaping business.

As we look ahead to 2027, we are excited to uncover the trends, challenges and opportunities that will define the next chapter of sales across both regions.

A huge thank you to our incredible partners in New Zealand and Australia for their continued support and collaboration and, of course, to the thousands of people who have contributed over time.

Rising Competition & Emerging Headwinds

Marked by intensifying market competition, an initial dip in business confidence, and clients beginning to tighten spending.

Pre-Pandemic Economic Softening

Characterized by a general market slowdown, rising pessimism, and internal capacity constraints restricting revenue potential prior to major global disruptions.

COVID-19 Disruption & Budget Constraints

Centered on responding to pandemic-related lockdowns, adapting to remote selling, and navigating reduced customer spending.
MOTSL_cover_2022

Supply Chain Bottlenecks & Talent Shortages

Defined by a post-lockdown demand rebound that was severely choked by global supply chain disruptions and an intense war for sales talent.
MOTSL_cover_2023

Inflationary Pressures & Flat Budgets

Dominated by rapid inflation, rising operational costs, and a record number of companies adopting zero-growth or flat revenue budgets.
MOTSL_cover_2024

Reduced Demand & Protracted Sales Cycles

Marked by a power shift back to employers, shrinking client budgets, fierce market competition, and significantly prolonged purchasing decisions.
MOTSL_cover_2025-AUNZ

Recessionary Slump & Lowest Historical Growth

Centered on deep recessionary headwinds, state-of-the-economy anxiety, and the lowest proportion of growth-achieving businesses in survey history.
MOTSL_cover_2026AUNZ

The "Sideways Shuffle" & Price Competition Realism

Defined by stagnant revenue movement, intense price wars for shrinking client budgets, and economic recovery expectations being pushed out to late 2026 or 2027.
